August has several Notable Dates in History, such as August 4th, celebrated as Coast Guard Day to honor the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service, forebear of today's Coast Guard. The 6th of August marks the day when the first atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. August 14th is V-J day, or Victory over Japan Day, celebrating Emperor Hirohito's announcement of Japan's surrender. The actual signing of the Surrender did not happen until September 2nd. Look for Photos of this event in our Photographs Section. August 19th is Orville Wright's birthday, established by a presidential proclamation in 1939 to be designated as National Aviation Day.

BATTLESHIP NEW JERSEY MODEL

USS New Jersey (BB-62) is one of the four battleships of the Iowa class, the largest, fastest, most powerful, and last battleships the US ever built, and among the biggest battleships ever.Beyond her imposing size and physical characteristics, the "Big J" has an unmatched record of service to her country. She has received nine battle stars for World War II; four for the Korean conflict; and two for Vietnam. In 1975, a number of enthusiasts founded a Society to bring the ship to a place of honored retirement in her "name" state.
